Make Your Homework Time Count

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Aldene Fredenburg Under more pressure than ever to achieve, high school students often find themselves overwhelmed with increasing amounts of homework. While some high schools are guilty of assigning too much homework, there are ways of approaching the task that allow you to become more productive and efficient. Organizing your homework assignments saves a lot of time and wasted effort. Make sure you record your assignments for each class as they are given, and then make a checklist - before you leave school for the day if possible - to make sure you have all the tools and supplies you need for each assignment, including textbooks, class notes, additional reading material from the library, etc. If you have a study hall near the end of the day, use at least a few minutes of that time to organize yourself. Are there assignments that you believe are going to give you more trouble than others? Use your study hall time to think about those particular assignments, and either tackle them in study hall or think about some resources you can access before you leave school for the day. Maybe you need to clarify something with the teacher, or get information from one of your classmates about the assignment. Get a library pass and use your library time to gather resources for your evening’s homework. You should arrive home with everything you need to complete the evening’s homework assignments. Again, organization will save you time and trouble. Wherever you do your homework, whether it’s at your own desk on stretched out on the bed in your room, have all the books, notebooks, and supplies you need within easy reach. There are a few standard tricks to approaching reading assignments. Before you start to fully read the assigned passages, glance through them. Notice the chapter titles and the interior headings and subheadings, if any. Look at all the illustrations, charts, and tables, and be sure to read all the captions. Go to the back of the chapter or subchapter to see if there are any questions; if there are, read them. Then start reading the assignment in full, keeping a notebook handy. When you run across information which looks like it will help you answer the questions at the end of the passage, take notes, or at least jot down the page number as you come across relevant information. Even if you haven’t been assigned the questions as homework, try to answer them, at least by jotting down a few notes on each question (chances are your teacher will use these questions in class the next day, or as the basis for future tests). Make a list of your own questions about the subject to ask your teacher. At the beginning of each course, consider going through your assigned texts and creating an outline of each textbook. Create a three-ring binder and provide sections for each chapter and subchapter, and file your class notes and completed assignments as they come up in the appropriate section. If a class - for instance, algebra or physics - includes formulas which you need to work with and commit to memory, write the formula and one or two examples of the calculations on a separate page, and file the homework on succeeding pages. Do the same with theories - the commutative and associative principles of math should each have a separate page in your algebra notebook, for example. Design these particular pages in a way which will stand out and be easily found as you page through the notebook. What you create by imposing an organization at the beginning of your course is a template for studying as you move through the course and submit to quizzes and tests. Don’t forget to review your homework when you get it back from your teacher. If you’ve missed a few math problems, make sure you go over your work and figure out what you did wrong, and recalculate until you’re sure you’ve come up with the right solution and the reason for it. If your homework involves creative writing, which you enjoy, file it in its own binder. You may not have time to revise assigned writings now, but sometime in the future you may want to do some additional work on the subject, and you’ll have your writing assignments ready and organized, available for creative inspiration. One neat trick to keep you on task: Keep track of your time. Create a log which records the assignment, including page numbers of reading material, and record a start time and a finish time for each task. After a while you will develop an understanding of just how much time it takes to complete various assignments, and will help you plan your day and evening. It’ll also help conquer the worst problem many of us have with any task - procrastination - because you’ll know that a certain assignment is only going to take fifteen minutes, and then it’ll be over, and you can move on to another part of your life, like watching your newest DVD. Also, in the event that you really do have way too much homework - some schools and teachers are notorious for piling on very demanding assignments, day after day - you’ll have evidence! If you’re consistently burning the midnight oil and then arriving at school the next day bleary-eyed and sleep-deprived, talk to your parents. Armed with specific information, they may be able to intervene, either directly or through your local PTA. If you have an assignment - a school project, a term paper, or other task - which requires an extended period of time to complete, make your checklist and create a timetable for each task. Include planning, gathering of resources, outlining, reading (drawing, painting), etc., and divide up the necessary tasks into chunks of work which you can schedule over the time allowed for the assignment. Consider scheduling the task so that it actually gets done early; if the assignment is supposed to be passed in two weeks from Friday, for instance, try to schedule it for completion by Tuesday or Wednesday of that week. This give you time for false starts and problem solving, and will take the heat off and lower your stress level as you meet each task ahead of schedule. Don’t forget to schedule time for your personal life! Getting a handle on your homework assignments and the time they take means that you can incorporate them into other aspects of your life, like school activities, trips to the mall, parties, get-togethers with friends or family, etc. When you know that a particular group of assignments is going to take you two hours, it frees the rest of your time up for - well, living! Fun is a Powerful Alternative Medicine - Just Don’t Confuse it with Funny

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Cliff Kuhn, M.D. You’re familiar with the phrase, “there’s the rub,” meaning “there lies the difficulty”? It’s usually used to describe a stumbling block in your path or the central dilemma. But while it’s associated with Hamlet, did you know that this phrase was not coined by Shakespeare? I’ll finish this thought in a moment… Things that are funny are almost always fun. But things that are fun are not always funny. There’s the rub. Most of us, I’ve found, confuse these two…to our unfortunate detriment. It’s easy, and dangerous, to forget the distinction; when we focus on trying to elicit laughter we can quickly get discouraged because trying to create laughter puts a lot of pressure on us. Especially when some of us are not naturally good at telling jokes or being outwardly silly. Even if we are naturally good at it, focusing on laughter is still a mistake because it causes us to prematurely focus on the outcome rather than the process of humor. You see, laughter is a result, while fun is a process. Funny is an action, while fun is an attitude. Your light attitude is virtually unrestricted and can be had almost anywhere at anytime, while laughter has some very definite limitations. Since you can take your light attitude into any situation or circumstance, while trying to provoke laughter is sometimes inappropriate and unwelcome, is there any wonder that I am advocating fun over funny? How to Start Taking Yourself More Lightly…Today Here are three steps you can take right now to forget about being making people laugh and start focusing on having a light attitude: 1. Remember Your Fun. What games did you enjoy when you were 5 to 10 years old, when you were having fun naturally. Think of 10 specific examples of games you enjoyed and then ask yourself, “How many of them involved active imagination and physical movement?” I’ll bet most of the games on your list involved both. 2. Plan Your Fun. Take the list you made in Step One and update each game to a version you might be able to play currently. Can you think of an adult version of hide and seek, tag, or playing with dolls? How about trying to avoid direct eye contact with your boss when she’s looking for someone to work overtime this weekend, playing “phone tag,” or trying on clothes at the mall? But those are my ideas — see what you come up with. 3. Have Your Fun. Give yourself permission to have fun and back it up with a commitment to have 15 minutes of it each day. Why do you need a commitment? Because you are bucking years of incorrect indoctrination that it should be reserved for recreation. You want the excellence which, research shows, fun creates so well. The lesson is simple: you want the full benefit of humor’s powerful natural medicine, so don’t confuse lightness with laughter. They are definitely not the same thing. While it might be funny to give an elephant an enema, for example, I’m sure it’s not fun! And now you don’t need to worry whether or not you can create laughter to benefit from the natural medicine of humor. Want to take your health and success even further? Here are three more steps which will supercharge the commitment you’ve made with the first three: 1. Fill Your 15 Minutes. Maybe you can’t find 10 variations on your childhood games…here are some great suggestions that’ll help you: Practice compassion. Compassion only requires a commitment to understand another person’s point of view. Often the practice of compassion has more to do with refraining from a negative response than with making a positive one. Compassion works because it suits our nature to understand each other and recognize our common experiences. Anonymously do kind things. Whether it be sending an encouraging note, giving a small gift, or paying for the car behind you at the toll booth, an anonymous act of kindness involves a touch of mischievousness and appeals to your humor nature. And doing it anonymously reinforces that your act is done for pure joy, rather than recognition. Play practical jokes. I’m not advocating victimizing anyone; a practical joke can be spontaneous, simple, and painless. For example, filling up a coworker’s desk with miniature golf pencils won’t hurt anyone. Practical joking encourages a mischievous, childlike perspective and communicates a willingness to play. 2. Expand Your Commitment. Take your 15 minutes and turn it into a commitment of 30 minutes each day. Don’t feel like your 30 minutes needs to be all at once, break your fun into “bite size” 5 or 10 minute chunks. But I can’t overstate how much your health, wellness, vitality, and success will be infused with energy when you intentionally create 30 minutes of lightness each day. 3. Have Fun All The Time. Weave it into everything you do, even if you are the only one who knows you are having it. To do this I want you to get in the habit of regularly asking yourself the most important question possible: “Am I having fun?” When the answer is “no,” do something to fix that right away! When you must persist in such an activity, you must do three things: A. Finish the activity as quickly as possible without lingering over it. B. Do whatever you can, mentally, to make a game out of it. C. Compensate yourself for tolerating the situation for as long as you had to. Ever since we started school, people in charge have been teaching us to suppress our playful nature and, thus, limit our greatest health and success. However well intentioned our authority figures were, we were incorrectly taught to equate seriousness with being responsible and successful. How fortunate we are to not only learn that we are actually more efficient, creative, and effective when we take ourselves less seriously, but also to learn exactly how to lighten up. Shakespeare, by the way, didn’t originate the phrase “there’s the rub,” he only made it famous. In Hamlet, Hamlet considers death as a way to end life’s struggles and finally rest easily. But then he also realizes there would be a catch. “To sleep, perchance to dream. Ay, there’s the rub;For in that sleep what dreams may come,When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,Must give us pause.”Hamlet, Act 3, Scene 1 Don’t fall for the trap of trying to elicit laughter. You’ll put less pressure on yourself and you’ll also feel the full measure of humor’s incredibly powerful natural medicine. How to turbo-charge your health, success, and vitality! Clifford Kuhn, M.D., America’s Laugh Doctor, teaches people and organizations to be more healthy and successful through the use of fun and humor. Get A Guy- 15 Tips For Your First Internet Date

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

By Coco Swan Girls! That guy youve been busy e-mailing on the dating site has finally committed to meet in person. Heres how to survive that first real person date! 1: Be punctual. Do you like to be kept waiting? Arriving late gives the impression that you are inconsiderate of others time. 2: Try to meet for a coffee. Chatting over a coffee can go from 15 minutes to 2 hours. If the guy is a total loser it is totally acceptable to wrap it up fast. If you have plenty in common one coffee can easily become two. 3: Arrive sober. Stay sober. Alcohol may give him the idea that you are a lush or easy and will also lower your inhibitions, perhaps with you later thinking, I didnt really mean to say or do that. 4: Smile! Be upbeat and try and stay positive without giving the impression you are on your tenth coffee. 5: Leave your cell phone off or at best on silent but do not answer it or acknowledge it.. You will never find a partner if you cant give the guy 15 minutes of your attention without the rest of your world stopping . 6: Go with your basic instincts. If he seems like a potential stalker or psychopath employ your plan b exit plan for emergencies a.s.a.p. 7: Go for smart casual or after work look. Wait for the nightclub date to show off the nightclub frock and makeup. A lot of guys are put off by excessive dramatic makeup, so go for natural and discreet. Tactfully show off your best attributes. Fantastic legs? Boot leg trousers or shortish skirt will show him this without you having to resort to a micro-mini skirt . Your cleavage your best asset? Wrap tops are great for these fortunate ladies because they show your curves without wearing a shirt that starts opening halfway to your belly ring. Remember, you want him to come back for more, not feel like hes seen the whole you on the first meeting. 8: Absolutely no sex! Even if he is your George Clooney and youve been in a sexual hiatus for seemingly years. Having sex on a first encounter has just made this first date a dreaded one night stand. You need to stimulate the guys respect, interest and like. The lust mode is much more easy to engage than the afore mentioned aspects. Remember the oft quoted male interpretation of would you like to meet for a coffee? really means eventually Id like to have sex with you. Make him wait. 9: For safety issues never, ever give out fine details that pin point exactly where you live. What happens if he turns out to be a stalker? 10: Avoid past relationship autopsies. No one likes damaged goods. Make sure you have the basic areas of your life covered with short and sweet explanations. Dont forget he wouldnt be free to have coffee with you if his own love life was in perfect order so he also has some sort of history. 11: Treat him with the same respect you like for yourself. Nowadays, everyone is so tied up in themselves and have become so me,me,me. 12: Stranger danger. You cant be too careful. Inform a friend where you are going and with whom (a little tricky with internet dating).Select a well lit, busy coffee shop thats easy to enter and leave. If the encounter is unsuccessful you dont want to be worrying about scurrying down some dark alley, being followed to the subway or harassed hailing a cab. You could also plan to meet a friend afterwards. Please do not have your friend sit there and watch on you from another table as this is too disconcerting and sometimes obvious, not too mention a bit school girlish. If you become fearful try a ruse like going up to the wait staff to order another coffee, mention to them you dont feel safe and can they keep an eye out on you. Go to the powder room and call your emergency exit. Get out as quickly and politely as you can. Make sure he is not following you. 13: Try to hear as well as talk. Both of you should leave feeling like you got a bit of a better understanding of the other. How often do you and your girlfriends say about a potential date he is just so into himself, his career that he wasnt even interested in anything about me? Even though it sounds terribly obvious a safe balance is about 50/50 although it can be tricky with first date nervousness etc to get it right between clamming up entirely and verbal diarrhea. 14: Be friendly, listen and smile. First impressions do count. When trying to find a long term partner dont sell yourself short by coming over as tacky or cheap. You want to be treated with respect with an eye on the future not viewed as a quick sexual conquest. 15: Practice makes perfect. Some say you are here for as good time not a long time. Dont tie yourself up in knots about these first dates, if this one wasnt a success then it really was just perfecting your dating skills whilst waiting for your Mister Right to come along. Hopefully next time! Good Luck, Coco Swan. Copyright 2007 Author Coco Swan Coco recommends reading this easy-path and increasingly popular guide to making sure you get the guy you want. Virginia Accident Lawyers

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

By Richard Romando An accident is, in most cases, an event that arises from a careless act. It can result in physical and emotional injury. Accidents occur mostly on roads involving motor vehicles and can result in serious injury to the parties involved. An accident lawyer provides legal services to the injured persons in these circumstances. Using his training and experience, an accident lawyer assesses the situation and prepares medical claims on behalf of the injured claimant. The lawyer also follows up on the claims to ensure that the claims are settled as quickly as possible. Lawyers in Virginia who offer their legal advice and services primarily to accident victims are referred to as Virginia accident lawyers. With the increase in the number of accidents, the laws guarding the rights of the affected parties have also increased. This puts additional power and responsibility on an accident lawyer in terms of providing a wide range of personal-injury-related legal support and services. When you have been involved in an accident, have experienced an injury or loss from medical carelessness, or have been hurt from personal injury from a faulty product, an advisable option would be to consult an accident lawyer who can help with the legal ramifications by offering expert legal advice on how to seek due compensation for the particular injury. For your accident lawyer to offer you efficient service, it is imperative to provide him with complete and correct details pertaining to the accident. The important information would be the name of the driver, his or her date of birth, telephone number, license number, insurance company, and insurance policy number. An accident lawyer needs to have this information together with full knowledge of the laws of the state regarding vehicular accidents to ensure that proper benefits and compensation are secured for the client. If an accident occurs in the state of Virginia, you have to consult a lawyer to protect your legal rights. There are help lines that enable you to consult a lawyer quickly and free of charge. Plastic Surgery in 2007

Monday, February 25th, 2008

By Ricardo Silva As we move into 2007, another year passes into antiquity and we age another year. For many, this is a time of reflection and thoughts of plastic surgery come to the fore. Plastic Surgery in 2007 In 2006, the plastic surgery profession saw a lot of new innovations. From the increased popularity of thread procedures to other advancements, it was a year where procedures became more advanced, particularly in relation to improved recovery times. In general, this trend should continue in 2007, but the new year is destined to be known for one thing and one thing only. 2007 will forever be known as the year silicone breast implants returned to plastic surgery. As you may have heard, silicone is officially back. Ever since its ban, there have been more and more questions about the merit of why the silicone breast implant was banned in the first place. In the 1980s, the popularity of silicone breast implants was undisputed. They were so popular, that manufacturers had difficulty keeping up with the demand. Then things took a turn for the worse. Simply put, questions started being raised about the impact of silicone implants on the health of women. The problem was not the very notion of silicone implants, but how they were performing over time. In liquid form, silicone is not good for the body. With implants, the silicone was in a quasi-liquid form. For form and safety purposes, however, it was encapsulated in harder material. Problems started to rise as people became concerned that the implants were leaking silicone either through sweating or outright leaks in the capsule contain the material. As silicone entered the body, it caused all types of health problems and resulted in disability and even death. At least, these were the general claims. In the resulting hysteria, silicone implants were banned for elective surgery. In the ensuing years, the manufactures of silicone implants argued that there was no evidence supporting the ban. The government disagreed, but agreed to revisit the issue from time to time. In response, the manufacturers eventually came up with new implant designs that offered better encapsulation of the silicone. The government finally relented and announced at the end of 2006 that it will allow silicone implants to be put back on the elective surgery market. So, does all of this mean silicone implants are safe? Well, maybe. The lifting of the ban is based more on a lack of evidence of harm being caused than it is on a declaration of safety. Before you rush out for silicone implants, you should discuss in detail the risks and benefits of them compared to saline implants, which do not contain silicone. Regardless, there is little doubt that silicone implants will become popular again and be the story in 2007 when it comes to plastic surgery. How Do I Choose a Good Personal Injury Lawyer?

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

By Matt Clarkson Personal injury cases are serious matters. They often involve grave injury, permanent disability, and even death. Victims depend on the personal injury lawyer to recover financial damages that are required to cover their medical treatments, replace permanently lost income, and compensate for their pain and suffering. Without a qualified, experienced personal injury lawyer, their chances of receiving fair compensation plummet. That’s why its really important that, if youve been a victim of personal injury, you choose the right personal injury lawyer to represent you. Here are a few things to consider when making your selection: Choose an attorney who specializes in personal injury Your personal injury lawyer should be able to accurately assess the merits of a personal injury case, approximate its monetary value, and determine the best strategy for pursuing it. He or she should also have extensive experience in the field. Your personal injury lawyer should also who keep current with the latest developments in personal injury law. Choose a personal injury lawyer experienced in dealing with insurance companies Insurance company lawyers represent most personal injury case defendants. These corporate lawyers seek to pay out the least amount possible, so an inexperienced personal injury lawyer may be at a disadvantage in these negotiations. Therefore, choosing a personal injury lawyer with a proven track record of successful negotiations is essential. Choose a personal injury lawyer with trial experience Although most personal injury claims are settled out of court, personally injury lawyers sometimes obtain favorable settlements by threatening to take cases to trial. The defendants are often willing to pay out more money to the plaintiffs to avoid expensive trials, negative publicity, and the chance that a court would award the plaintiffs more money. In this case, experience is key: if your personal injury lawyer has never won cases in court, the defendant in your lawsuit may not take the threat of going to trial seriously. Personal injury cases are brought about by physical injury or mental anguish caused by actions or negligence of another party. Personal Injury cases can include Auto Accidents, Defamation of Character, Product Defects and Medical Malpractice to name just a few. In order to be sure if your personal injury case has validity in the eyes of the law, contact a legal professional in your state. If you suffer accidental personal injury or damages through the fault of another, that person or business is legally responsible (liable) and can be required to pay compensation. To determine responsibility, the court looks for negligence–carelessness by one of the parties involved. Whoever is determined to have been less careful (i.e. more negligent), is legally responsible for at least part of the damages incurred. Compensation is generally awarded based on the strength of your documentation and degree of injury. A legal professional is recommended in Personal Injury cases over all others in order to maximize your compensation in the face of the Insurance companies, which normally defend such cases. Advance Your Career by Being a Knowledge Worker

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

By Dale Kurow Whats a knowledge worker? The phrase “knowledge worker” was introduced by Peter Drucker over thirty years ago to describe someone who provides value by creating new information which then can be used to define and solve problems. Why should you care? Anyone who wants to excel in his/her career or who wants to outshine the competition needs to be a knowledge worker. I was prompted to write about this concept because it struck me that while theres an overload of information available, most people feel lost as to where to find the best information and how to translate it. So, how do you become a Knowledge Worker? By using your intellect to turn your ideas into processes, services or products. You can become a worker who sources between his/her ears by translating information into a user-friendlier format, by defining and solving problems, and by adding deeper understanding and knowledge to already existing information. And because knowledge has such a limited shelf life, the gathering, translating and applying of knowledge becomes an even more critical career skill. A Key for Job Seekers too! One of the key qualities that employers seek is intellectual curiosity. This is another way of underscoring the importance of refining your thought processes and being a knowledge worker. Job candidates who exhibit intellectual curiosity have the edge because of the time saving and/or profit-enhancing methods they typically invent. These employees are inherently less of a drain on management resources. How do you learn to source between your ears and become a Knowledge Worker? Heres how: By seeking out experts in your field By building a community of peers and associates who can provide a wellspring of inspiration and a testing ground for nascent ideas By having conversations that raise the level of discourse and expand the reach of your knowledge By attending professional conferences By reading journals, books and other knowledge sources Here are recent client examples showing how being a knowledge worker has paid off: One client raised her profile with her employer by being the expert on how to pitch a story to a specific media outlet. She knew who to call and what to say. No one else had this knowledge. Another client used his formidable knowledge of competitive market intelligence to pitch a new employer. The prospective employer was so impressed that they want to create a job for him. A third client was promoted because of his continuing efforts to streamline a new paint process that had major startup glitches. He persevered, mastered the new equipment and installed fail safe procedures that earned him recognition from the Plant Manager and VP of Manufacturing. Few employers could argue with the benefits of employing knowledge workers: efficiency, effectiveness and innovation. My advice? Set yourself apart by becoming a knowledge worker. The time you spend in self-development and deepening your knowledge in your area of expertise can be as valuable as an advanced degree. Self Help Marriage Counseling - 5 Critical Tips for Success

Monday, February 18th, 2008

By Liz Wasson Welcome to the 21st Century. This is the day and age of instant information. Many people simply visit their favorite search engine to learn how to fix, repair and restore anything and everything - including marriage. Are you seeking some self help marriage counseling? If so, these pointers will be worth reviewing. 1. Consider Help If you think you can solve everything wrong in your marriage by taking the self help marriage counseling route consider incorporating tools and techniques from professionals. When you have more information you’ll have more choices and when you can make more choices you will stand more of a chance of discovering what does and does not work. 2. About your friends Be careful about who you share your problems with. Even good friends when put under too much stress will confide what you’ve told them to their other friends. The last thing you need when trying to solve your marriage problems are rumors on top of rumors. 3. Don’t project When you’re looking for a self help marriage solution make sure you’re not projecting onto your partner. Many times we’ll read things into our relationship based on our own insecurities or past experiences. Rather than project what we think is happening it is vital to discover what is really happening. How do we do that? 4. Communication is Key Communicating with your spouse is critical to managing any marriage especially when you are seeking self help marriage counseling. One of the greatest problems with any marriage - in fact, any relationship - is communication. The only way to really know what someone is thinking is to ask. Mind reading, while many of us do it, is dangerous and destructive. Like projecting, you see something happen and then you leap to a conclusion (based on your own fear or anxiety or lack of self worth). Whenever we judge other people without knowing all the facts we make mistakes that are hard to undo. 5. Is it productive Many people seeking self help marriage counseling may not want to admit that the marriage just isn’t working. Some marriages are worth saving and others aren’t. Ask yourself questions about how you feel in your marriage. Are you happy with your partner? Do you have anything in common? Many times people grow apart and before you jump into your self help marriage solution you should be taking inventory on how you feel. Grab a piece of paper and do the time tested Ben Franklin. Simply draw a line down the middle of the sheet and on one side list everything that works in your marriage and on the other side list everything that doesn’t. Once you have your list notice each topic and jot down a feeling next to it. For example you might have “no time for me” on your list. How does that make you feel? Are you sad about that? Are you angry about that? The core of a healthy relationship is in how we feel when we’re with our special someone. The list helps you see if your special someone is treating you like the valuable and irreplaceable gift that you are. Relationships, especially marriage, are complicated. It’s when we forget the other person, their feelings and their gifts that we begin to take them for granted. Oft times we feel as if we’ve become an object rather than a treasured companion. Protein - Its Place In Your Weight Loss Program

Friday, February 15th, 2008

By Kay Blackiston Any food that we take into our bodies is composed of macronutrients, micronutrients and water. The macronutrients (macro = large) are protein, fat and carbohydrates; the micronutrients (micro = small) are vitamins, minerals and trace elements. Macronutrients provide the calories that provide energy for life; micronutrients have no calories but are an essential part of our diet. Without macronutrients we would starve to death, without micronutrients we would die from health deterioration. So, what exactly is protein? Technically speaking proteins are any of a large group of nitrogenous (containing nitrogen) compounds of high molecular weight that are essential constituents of all living organisms. They consist of 22 biological compounds called amino acids. They provide the building materials for the basic cell structure of the heart, brain, blood, nails, hair, internal organs and skin in fact for every living cell in our body. You would recognise proteins better if they were defined as red meat, fish, poultry, dairy products, eggs and soy. To understand the importance of protein as an aid for weight loss we also have to briefly define what carbohydrates and fats are: carbohydrates are basically sugars, usually referred to as either simple or complex. Simple or refined carbohydrates are the ones like sugar, honey, cakes, biscuits and white bread. Complex carbohydrates are whole grain breads and cereals, brown rice, some vegetables, beans and legumes, and certain fruits. Fats are technically triglycerides and are usually divided into two groups; saturated and non-saturated. Saturated fats are usually solid at room temperature and include fats found in meat, dairy products, ice cream, milk and tropical oils. Unsaturated fats are usually liquid at room temperature and come in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated forms. Monounsaturated include oils from some nuts, olives and avocadoes. Polyunsaturated include oils from soybean, flax, sunflower, safflower as well as those fats that have been chemically transformed to make them solid like margarine. But the most important thing to consider is what effect do proteins, carbohydrates and fats have on your body? Or more specifically what effect do they have on the production of insulin in your body. Insulin is essential to life, some of its many functions are to control the storage of fat, control appetite, regulate the retention of water in the kidneys and the synthesis of cholesterol in the liver and it also acts as a growth hormone. Eating fat has little effect on your insulin levels, and it actually decreases your appetite. Also eating the right kind of fats can rebalance hormones and improve the way you look and feel. When you eat carbohydrates your body produces digestive enzymes that break down the chemical bonds between the sugar molecules. These molecules stimulate the production of metabolic hormones including insulin and this is where the problems can start. If we have a diet too high in carbohydrates, particularly refined carbohydrates, the high levels of glucose cause high levels of insulin to be produced. This can cause insulin resistance, where the bodys cells become non-responsive to the insulin so the pancreas keeps producing more and more. It also means the body fails to burn the glucose as energy and instead it is stored as fat! If this happens constantly the build up of glucose in the blood can cause Type II diabetes. The high level of insulin also tells a gland in the brain, the hypothalamus, to send out hunger signals. So you could have just eaten a meal and you would still feel hungry, there will be nothing that satisfies that hunger. Eating protein produces a moderate amount of insulin but also produces the hormone glucagon. This hormone stimulates the body to get rid of fat by burning it for energy; it also decreases the bodys production of cholesterol and stimulates the kidney to release excess salt and fluid. It also maintains your blood sugar level counteracting the effect of insulin, which lowers the blood sugar levels. So, what should we be eating? Recent studies recommend 100g of protein for women and 150g of protein for men. An excellent way of getting the majority of your protein intake is by using a meal replacement product with extra protein powder if necessary. This takes all the guess work out of two thirds of your protein intake and when combined with a third meal of low fat protein (e.g. chicken or turkey) and low glycaemic vegetables gives the ideal diet to lose weight, gain energy, lower cholesterol and blood pressure and possibly reverse Type II diabetes.
