By Alan Summers When you choose a lilac you are planting a shrub that is part of our American heritage - some have even called the lilac the “apple pie of shrubs.” Thomas Jefferson planted lilacs at Monticello and lilacs greeted guests as they entered George Washington’s flower garden at Mount Vernon. Poet Walt Whitman’s elegy to Abraham Lincoln, “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d” evokes an image of a lilac bush that may be familiar to many: In the dooryard fronting an old farm-house near the white-wash’d palings, Stands the lilac-bush tall-growing with heart-shaped leaves of rich green, With many a pointed blossom rising delicate, with the perfume strong I love, With every leaf a miracle - and from this bush in the dooryard, With delicate-color’d blossoms and heart-shaped leaves of rich green, A sprig with its flower I break. French and Dutch colonist first introduced lilacs to the United States, carrying them during their long journeys across the Atlantic Ocean. Lilacs soon found themselves all over North America, arriving by saddlebags and coach. Today there are over 2,000 named varieties of lilacs thanks to many industrious and passionate breeders all over the world. Our feature plant this week is the Dwarf Korean Lilac - the most useful of all the lilacs, and Alan’s favorite of all the shrubs we grow. It is easy to grow and maintain, making a beautiful and welcome addition to your garden. The Dwarf Korean Lilac (Syringa meyeri Pablibin)The Dwarf Korean Lilacs’ parent, the Syringa meyeri, is named after Frank Meyer who discovered it in a garden in Beijing, China in 1909 and sent cuttings home to the United States. Many lilacs are offspring of the Syringa meyeri, but the palabin Dwarf Korean Lilac is the smallest and most delightful. The clean, dark green foliage provides the perfect backdrop for the exquisite powerfully fragrant, lavender pink florets that will cover the dense bush from head to toe. Expect it to bloom in May-June, with lighter rebloom in later summer and fall, extending the season and allowing you to enjoy its beauty and fragrance twice during the year. Foliage turns bright yellow in autumn. Unlike other common lilacs, the Dwarf Korean Lilac blooms profusely at an early age and is not susceptible to powdery mildew. Expect it to grow four to five feet high and wide, the perfect size for a perennial border, foundation planting or shrub border foreground. No matter where the Dwarf Korean Lilac is planted in your garden, it is sure to be a standout year after year. Planting and Care The Dwarf Korean Lilac is one tough plant, a real survivor. Over ten years ago we planted some in wooden planter boxes that were fabricated over a black top parking lot in full sun. These planter boxes never get any supplemental water, only what mother nature provides. Every year the lilacs bloom profusely, hold their leaves all summer without browning, rebloom in the fall and never suffer any winter die back. After the drought of 2002, I expected the lilacs to be totally dead. When I drove by in the spring of 2003 they were in full bloom, just as they have been every year. For best results, plant in early spring. Lilacs require at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Plant in good, well-drained soil. Water regularly until established and during the summer. Prune old blooms away immediately after flowering to encourage more blossoms. Fertilize with Bulb-Tone at planting and again in the spring. We spend a great bit of time together when I am there. Toy, games and just plain talking about kid stuff. When I’m not there we still spend a great bit of time together. It is called Internet. My first quilt was very expensive to do by the time I purchased the material, the batting, and the backing, it ended up costing well over $100. While I really enjoyed quilting, I thought there must be a less expensive way. Well, I have found ways to make them much cheaper. My list on less expensive ways to make quilts: 1. I obtain curtain samples that companies are no longer using. I cut them into blocks and they work great! I can usually get the samples for $1.00. 2. Second hand stores often have material that you can buy for less than $2.00. I cut it up into blocks, which gives me a wide assortment of colours and textures to choose from. 3. Old clothes that no longer fit or that are worn in the knees or elbows. Cut out the seams, and cut the material into blocks or strips; it works great!! 4. You can bid on ebay auctions for material that is already cut into blocks. You can get some good buys! 5. For the backing I use fleece throws. You can usually obtain these from Wal-Mart or the Dollar Store for under $10.00. I fit my blocks to cover the fleece throw, and then machine quilt the two together. So now rather than spending $100. for the materials, I rarely spend over $15.00, and I end up with some beautiful quilts! Starter Tips for Machine Quilting - start on a simple pattern, blocks 6 x 6. By Nur Syahid Aromatherapy originated in Ancient Egypt. About a hundred years ago, a pharmacist from France used an innovative method which led to a breakthrough in aromatherapy techniques. In recent years, under the strong promotion by Sathelyne Group, BelAir aromatherapy came into being to benefit many consumers. For centuries, people have experienced and have come to recognise that essential oils have many benefits. Professor Tsai also hopes to share knowledge with international institutions and publish academic papers. At the same time, he aims to educate the public on aromatherapy. The Effects of Essential Oils on Micro-organisms Present in the Air Between August 2000 and September 2002, BelAir Bio-tech Research Centre carried out a research program to determine whether Green tea essential oil, Ginseng essential oil, Eucalyptus essential oil and Lavender essential oil have an influence on the amount of micro-organism (mold, yeast, fungus, bacteria) in the air. The researchers conducted tests on Green Tea essential oil, Ginseng essential oil, Eucalyptus essential oil and Lavender essential oil. They burned these 4 types of essential oils in a sealed room, and recorded readings at different time intervals. Readings were taken at the beginning of experiment (0 min), during the experiment (30, 50, 70, 90 mins) and after the experiment (30, 60, 90,120,150,180,210 mins). The experiment was repeated several times based on a sample of 500 litres of air. The experiment results proved that: Green Tea has 90% effectiveness in killing bacteria; and 61% effectiveness in killing fungus. Ginseng has 90% effectiveness in killing bacteria; and 62% effectiveness in killing fungus. Eucalyptus has 52% and 48% effectiveness respectively, as pertaining to the items above. Lavender has 66% and 71% effectiveness respectively, as pertaining to the items above.Professor Tsai expressed excitement and interest in such results, because the experiment proved that Sathelyne BelAirs aromatherapy products indeed could combat micro-organism in the air, thus purifying the air. He also said that although the effectiveness figures for fungus seem low, but that is desirable because this would mean that it would not be harmful to the body. After obtaining such positive and encouraging results, BelAir has worked even harder to carry out the 2nd experiment. This program made detailed analysis and records of the chemical compositions of these 5 essential oils, and tests were done to determine their chemical and biological safety. Professor Tsai carefully selected Ginseng, Green Tea, Green Bamboo, Lotus and Eucalyptus as the 5 essential oils for the experiment. The reason for such a selection was because the 1st four essential oils are plants from the East, of which not enough researches had been carried out in the West. The selection of Eucalyptus was to act as a test reference for the other 4. Chemical and Biological Safety Experiment The 2nd experiment went through the following steps: Using GC-MS to analyse the chemical composition of these 5 essential oils. Based on their individual chemical compositions, analysis was done to determine the safety for use of essential oils. Using GC_MS to determine the after effects of these essential oils, whether any by-products or toxins were produced in the combustion process. Using Ames test to test the before and after changes of these essential oils. Using skin cells, fat cells and HepG2cancer cells to determine essential oils effects. Find out what effects these essential oils have in combating bacteria and killing micro-organism such as mold, yeast and fungus (MIC). The 2nd experiment results proved that these essential oils have compositions that are mild, low in toxins, do not irritate skin and have low light-sensitivity. The Ames test also proved that these essential oils do no go through major changes before and after the combustion process. What is more encouraging is that before the test, these essential oils already contained beneficial compositions, but after the test, these beneficial compositions diffused into the air and these are what the body needs exactly. Moreover, the body does not easily absorb these compositions in our daily activities. These experiments carried out by BelAir and Yang Ming University have achieved positive results, and we hope that in future, there will be more of such experiments to make the benefits known to consumers. Perhaps because 9/11 and anthrax were the impetus for the funding of this push, corporate America has associated this large expense with what they believe to be an unlikely threat, terrorism. The 2004 2005 hurricane seasons gave the southeastern regions of the United States a clear focus for disaster preparedness in the forms of hurricanes Charlie, Francis, Ivan, Jeanne, Katrina, Rita and Wilma. Unfortunately with this focus came a tendency to prepare for hurricanes, certainly not an all hazards approach. The simple fact missed by all but a very few in the disaster community and even fewer in the disaster planning, preparation, education, response and recovery industry is that the word disaster does not belong in the title. We are not a disaster community, nor are we in the disaster planning, preparation, education and recovery industry; rather we are the All Hazards planning, preparation, education and recovery community. Before you assume this is simply a matter of semantics, think about what we seek to accomplish. Our All Hazards community does not just seek to prepare for the possible of a terrorist attack or a natural disaster, we seek to fundamentally change attitudes and behaviors so that when adversity strikes or disaster looms large on the horizon, our citizens, our communities and our infrastructure are prepared. Our true goal is to never again see a line at Home Depot or the grocery store the day before or the day after a disaster. This is not a new concept. The practice of vulnerability analysis and risk assessment is well established in many safety sensitive industries and in the military. The Institutes of Medicine first applied this practice to the healthcare industry in the 1999 To Err Is Human report. Far from a treatise on disaster preparation, To Err is Human was the warning siren that brought the issues of patient safety and medication errors to the public forum. Although voluminous, the main thrust of To Err is Human was to review the lack of reporting systems and fail safes in the healthcare system as a whole and to correlate the current state of safety in healthcare to that of other industries. To Err is Human goes to great lengths to detail public-private safety efforts, but overall the report proposes the groundwork and a justification for governmental intervention and federal regulation of healthcare safety and by implication, healthcare quality/certification. If this sounds a lot like the trio of 2006 Institute of Medicine reports on the state of Emergency Medicine and disaster preparedness, it is very similar. The 2006 reports when combined with the 1999 To Err is Human report demonstrate the similarity between community wide disasters and patient centered disasters. A true All Hazards approach to preparedness thus should include patient safety, medication safety, fire safety and personal safety in addition to the current concentration on terrorism and disaster preparedness. There are a number of advantages to this expanded All Hazards approach to safety, planning and preparedness. The greatest of these is the integration of patient safety initiatives and disaster preparedness training allowing healthcare professionals to practice disaster preparation skills as part of their daily routine. This has applications in team building, triage, safety reviews, command structures, patient throughput and literally every aspect of hospital operations. The implications go far beyond the immediate process improvements that come from an All Hazards training program. The mind set that is instilled in those trained in an All Hazards approach to daily operations lends to innovations in operational processes and streamlining of previously entrenched systems. All Hazards training also creates the common safety investment that the To Err is Human states is missing from healthcare, but common to such industries as air travel and railroads (pilots and engineers share the same safety investment as passengers). Those who have received All Hazards training come to understand and internalize that reality that any risk that exists for a patient exists for the healthcare professional as well. Finally, recognizing patient safety issues and all the other safety issues in healthcare as hazards under an All Hazards approach will result in better success in achieving both sets of goals. Patient safety initiatives celebrate their seventh anniversary this year, but even the CEO of the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) admits that medication error and wrong site surgery have grown exponentially in that time. Despite a virtually limitless budget and the best efforts of the best minds in patient safety, healthcare has not gotten better, it has gotten more dangerous. At the same time, the past five years has seen hospital and healthcare disaster preparedness change only marginally. The 2006 Institute of Medicine reports severely criticizes healthcare for failing to invest in All Hazards preparedness despite the fact that it has been proven effective not only in increasing security, but increasing surge capacity, safety and efficiency. For All Hazards preparedness, the problem is not having the budget to apply a proven and effective solution. Dealing with patient risks, medication errors and surgical mishaps as another category of hazards under an all encompassing All Hazards approach promises to solve the problems for both programs. Patient safety will benefit from the proven efficacy of an All Hazards approach designed specifically to mitigate multifactorial risk while All Hazards training programs will finally have the budget priority and funding needed to ensure system wide implementation. The only question remaining is whether those who have made their careers in patient safety as it has been practiced for the past seven years are prepared to adopt a broader view of the world and whether the All Hazards community is ready to be truly All Hazards in their approach.
